„Saulė“ rally - where the champions crash out The third round of Lithuanian rally championship will take place in Šiauliai city district on 11-12th of July in northern Lithuania. Rally “Saule 2009” is also a third event of FIA North European Zone (NEZ) Rally Nationscup for year 2009. This gravel event is also known as Samogitia rally (“Žemaitijos ralis”) and few years ago a part of it was even held in Lithuanian-Latvian territories. After the short brake when there had been no championship rallies, it came back on the calendar again and for the last two years “Saule” rally is an event of Lithuanian rally championship (LARČ). It means “Saule 2009” will attract the strongest Lithuanian crews not to mention the guests from the other countries. Samogitian gravel roads are known for being fast and demanding for the crews at the same time. "Saule" is one of the most technically demanding and difficult rallies in Lithuanian rally championship calendar. Routes consist of mixed complexity - from wide and fast to very narrow and twisty sections. This is the main fascinating feature of "Saule" rally. Very interesting note is that every year champions of Lithuanian rally championship find hard to finish this rally on the podium. Last year V.Švedas rolled his EVO IX N4 on twisty section. R. Lipeikis knocked nose of his EVO VIII A8 after big jump causing radiator damage back in 2007. The start of rally “Saule 2009” is on the 11th of July (Saturday) in Šiauliai city. There will only be two identical special stages on tarmac – each stage is 4.6 kilometers long. However, the main part of the event will be held on Sunday. With 10 gravel stages together 105.5 km long, the main action will continue on the country roads around Kelmė (about 40 km from Šiauliai).
